The Kennedy Factor

There is another scandal brewing in Washington. Congressman Patrick Kennedy crashed into a barracade last night around 3am. Officers who responded to the scene were denied the chance to administer a breathalizer by their superiors. Kennedy has a history of substance abuse problems.

A Capitol Police officer stated that Kennedy appeared to be staggering when he left the vehicle. Kennedy denies being under the influence of alcohol and told the officer he was in the accident because he was late for a vote. The last vote of the day had been around 9pm.

The Congressman from the 1st district of Rhode Island may see pressure from an opponent should he get an opponent. However it is unlikely that it will cause him the election as his district is between between 60-68% Democrat.

However it does bring problems for the Democrats on a national level. They had been hoping to use corruption as a platform to take back both Congress and Senate. This incident gives the impression of entitlement by Democrats and weakens that corruption position.

Contrast this with the way the media first handled the story about Rush Limbaugh and his problem with painkillers. He was attacked and ridiculed, called a hypocrite, and generally given no sympathy what-so-ever. Now we have a Kennedy with a history of substance abuse and had crashed a car once before, but he is a democrat; a liberal like his older uncle Teddy, so the media immediately made excuses for him, brought out doctors and therapists who described the conditions he suffers from, etc. Where were all the doctor and chiropractor interviews for Rush and his chronic back-pain, explaining how someone could get addicted?

What is also interesting to note is, that Patrick Kennedy said in his statement to the press that he could not remember how he crashed, or how he got there, or much of anything it seems, BUT he did somehow remember he did not have any drinks. And now a waitress from the club or restaurant that he was at, said he did have some drinks.
